Among Italians a novena, nine days of religious preparations precedes Christmas.  On December 23rd (or earlier) a zampognari (bagpipers) shepherds or costumed children go from house to house singing carols before the family precepio (manger scene). The precepio began with St. Francis of Assissi in 1223. Before the traditional Yule log is lit on Christmas Eve, each child must recite a sermon to the Christ Child. Gift-giving is reserved for the Day of Epiphany, January 6th.  On the twelfth night, Befana, the old woman who foolishly refused to help the Wise Men, brings candies and distributes gifts to the children.

The Little Italian Cookbook

The Little Italian Cookbook is a treasure and keepsake of recipes handed down to our lodge members, their families and friends over the years. 

The book also contains recipes from John Travolta (actor) and Dom DeLuise (comedian/actor) as well as recipes from local chefs and restauranteurs.

The book is a celebration of the many great cooks that have touched our lives throughout the years, including our grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles who gave us great memories of Italian feasts, family and the bonding nature of delicious foods.

They gave us recipes measured with laughter and joy, spiced with their love and served to us with warm hearts.  We have passed these recipes down through the generations and on to you to enjoy.
